Position Title: Health Information Technology Coding Instructor

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Under the direct supervision of the Health Information Technology Program Chair/Instructor, the Health Information Technology Coding Instructor will be responsible for the following duties:

  1. Instruct students based upon the curriculum as approved by the Health Information Technology (HIT) Department, Medical Coding Program, Curriculum Development Committee Instructor/Faculty and Vice President of Academics, Career and Technical Education. Instructional methodologies include campus-based and web technologies.     
  2. Secondary advisor for students.  This role is to be taken seriously and enter into advisement relationships with students insofar as these relationships do not interfere with other helping and/or therapeutic relationships that students have on campus. 
  3. Participate in the ongoing improvement initiatives of the Medical Coding Program.  Assist in the maintenance of program effectiveness, efficiency, accreditation, and integrity.
  4. Assist in the activities relating to program budget and overseeing the financial resources are sufficient to provide effectiveness and efficiency. 
  5. Responsible to provide adequate classrooms, laboratories, professional practice settings, and administrative offices for students, staff, and faculty.
  6. Responsible for maintaining satisfactory records for student admission, attendance, and evaluation.
  7. Participates in other duties outside the classroom by membership in governance committees, participation in student activities, and advising such activities where appropriate.  The College is a community and all its members have responsibilities to that community that go beyond their classroom duties. 
  8. Additional responsibilities are: a) being sensitive to the cultures of the students taught; b) learning about those cultures; and c) integrating material from those cultures as appropriate.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The HIT Department and its Medical Coding Program, provides a culturally diverse environment within its otherwise normal and general classroom and office conditions, including online course delivery.

Normal working hours are from 8:00am until 5:00 pm with one hour for lunch break.
 
This position requires long periods of sitting.  Must be able to ascend/descend a flight of stairs (50-steps) and occasionally lift items not heavier than 25 pounds. 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Education:  Associates Degree from an accredited Health Information Technology Program or Education field.  Bachelor’s Degree preferred. 
  2. Experience:  Prior experience with educating and training is ideal. 
  3. Certification:  Needs to have or attain the appropriate status of instructor certification granted by the North Dakota State Board of Vocational and Technical Education. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Academic Advising: Knowledge of the curriculum sufficient to promote optimal learning outcomes.
  2. Coaching/Motivating: Ability to coach and motivate learners to develop medical transcription skills and competencies mandated by the industry and within the term/dates defined by the institution.
  3. Written and Oral Communications: Provides regular written and oral feedback to learners sufficient to help them progress in their acquisition of industry skills.  Writes reports and other official documents for the HIT Department.
  4. Computer Skills/Technology: Proficient computer skills are required to perform the essential job duties, including but not limited to simulated industry technology, such as speech recognition and dictation queues; Jenzabar EX, JICS/my.UTTC.edu; or other industry simulated systems and applications.
  5. Time Management: The ability to manage time while performing multiple tasks at one time is essential for adequate performance of the essential job duties. 
  6. Networking: Knowledge of the industry’s professional associations and hiring companies is critical to maintain the Program’s national recognition and graduate placement directly into industry. Ability to build collaborative working relationships with other UTTC faculty and staff. 
  7. Team Project Management: The ability to manage projects in a team environment is critical to the success of this position.
