February 4, 2014
BISMARCK (UTN) – Registration is open through February 10 for a workshop about seed-saving to be held at United Tribes Technical College. This free event takes place February 22-23 in the nutrition classroom of the United Tribes Skill Center. It’s open to the public but space is available for only two-dozen participants.
Presenting the workshop is Zachary Paige from the White Earth Land Recovery Project.
Training will focus on indigenous seed saving techniques, seed storage and organizing community seed projects. Participants will learn how to take-up or rejoin the age-old ritual of saving seeds.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22. A lunch of traditional foods will be served; including squash from seed aged 800 years and found in a clay ball!
Hours Sunday, Feb. 23 are from 9 a.m. to noon.
Participants will learn seed identification, plant ecology, plant taxonomy, seed harvesting techniques, storage, record keeping and much more.
The hands-on sessions are great for the beginner and a wonderful refresher for the more advanced. CEU’s are available.
