FAFSA Homepage
Returning and first-time users can get started on your FAFSA from the FAFSA Homepage. You’ll need your FSA ID to log in if you’re a returning user.
The FAFSA form applies to a single academic year. That means you need to submit a FAFSA form each year. You’ll find out how easy it is to renew your FAFSA at the Renewal Info page.

Types of Awards
Federal Aid
UTTC students can receive two types of federal aid: grants, and work study funds. First, students must have a complete FAFSA on file. After that is received, the awards are based on things like a students’ EFC and unmet financial need. You may have also heard about education loans. However, loans are not offered at UTTC. You can find more information about federal aid below.
Grant Funds
Federal Grants, like Pell and SEOG, are awarded to students who have financial need according to their FAFSA. This means the award amount depends on how much financial need a student has. The great thing about grant funding is that it does not have to be paid back. That is, as long as you complete the semester, you do not have to pay the money back (like you would a loan).
FWS
The Federal Work-Study Program is available to students with financial need. That means any student who has unmet financial need can participate in this program. When you are a student employee in the FWS program, you can work on campus with a schedule that is flexible around your classes.
North Dakota State Aid
North Dakota State Grant (NDSG) is need-based.
That means students who have unmet financial need are eligible for the award. Additionally, students must be in good academic standing. The amount of funds for this award changes each year. So, it is important to turn in your FAFSA early to be considered for the NDSG.
NDUS Scholarships
North Dakota scholarships are available to graduating high school students and American Indian students. There are a lot of different types of scholarships. That means it’s important to check what is available. You could be eligible for many of them! However, scholarships must be applied for (unlike the NDSG). First, find out which scholarships you are eligible for. Then, gather any info that’s requested. Finally, send in your application!

Private Aid
Scholarships and grants from private organizations may be needs-based or merit-based. Merit-based awards look at academic success. Needs-based awards look at financial need. That means if a scholarship is need-based, they may ask you for a Financial Needs Analysis. You can bring those to the financial aid office.

Special Circumstances and Professional Judgment Request
United Tribes Technical College recognizes that changes may be experienced in the financial situation of a household. While the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) determines financial aid eligibility based on data from two years prior, the Professional Judgement process exists to re-evaluate a student’s aid based on certain significant changes.
If you believe you have a change that would result in a lower Expected Family Contribution (EFC) or higher expenses on your Cost of Attendance (COA) please contact our office for a consultation.
