The Addiction Studies AS degree program prepares students with an introduction to addressing substance use disorders through culturally informed counseling and treatment services. This degree program combines professional addiction counseling education with an emphasis on indigenous approaches to healing. Graduates who continue for their baccalaureate degrees are equipped to pursue certification as addiction counselors and can serve in leadership roles providing vital treatment services within tribal communities. The program supports UTTC’s mission by developing knowledgeable professionals who can effectively address substance use challenges while honoring cultural values and traditions.
Program Outcomes
Graduates of the UTTC Addiction Studies AS degree and diploma programs will:
- Describe evidence-based practices that are involved in the treatment of addiction.
- Explain the role of treatment in addiction.
- Describe different types of evidence-based practices.
- Use a database to identify different evidence-based practices.
- Characterize the role of being an addiction counselor.
- Apply ethical guidelines pertaining to addiction counselors.
- Practice interpersonal skills relative to counseling profession.
- Describe the role of informed consent.
- Demonstrate counselor characteristics and behaviors that positively impact the counseling process, fostering trust and collaboration with clients.
- Discuss drugs and their role in society.
- Analyze the historical perspectives of drug use and drug users.
- Explain the process of the social construction of drug use as a social problem.
- Display knowledge of the various drugs, both legal and illegal, used in American society.
- Explain the role of psychological theories in mental disorders.
- Interpret the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.
- Recognize the role of culture when identifying abnormal behavior.
- Explain a mental disorder through psychological theory.
- Describe the neurobiological and medical underpinnings of mental disorder and co-occurring disorders to inform evidence-based interventions.
