Salary: $48,620

Summary of Duties:

  • Assist in short and long-term planning to support Wellness Center goals and UTTC’s strategic plan.
  • Remain current and adhere to legal requirements that affect students in higher education, i.e., FERPA, HIPAA, ADA, and/or all governing guidelines related to UTTC campus community.
  • Serve on the college’s “High Risk” Crisis Management Team and other selected committees and/or task groups to provide holistic services to meet individual need(s) of students and to support family systems.
  • Provide supportive and therapeutic counseling to students and/or their dependents in the areas of academics, personal life and daily living, social relationships, responsibilities, and behavioral expectations. Counseling includes parent-child relationships, significant-other relations, family dynamics, and daily living skills and home management. Academic counseling/support is a priority. Complete evaluations, in concert with other Wellness staff of students’ physical, psychological, and social strengths and challenges; make community-based referrals as appropriate.
  • Counsel students on academic probation and those returning from suspension. Assess needs and create with the student a short-term plan for immediate improvement.
  • Plan and implement group sessions for students and/or family clients; apply social work theory, knowledge, methods, ethics, and the professional use of self to restore or enhance social, psychosocial, or biopsychosocial functioning of individuals, couples, families, and groups.
  • Coordinate action and follow-up plans with UTTC campus departments when child abuse, child neglect and/or spousal abuse are evident. Initiate counseling intervention and referrals as needed. Report all abuse as a mandated reporter when children and youth under 18 years old are impacted.
  • Support UTTC policies and procedures related to on-campus housing, student organizations, student activities, safety and security, discipline, and all areas of student concerns.
  • Serve and assume leadership role(s) as appropriate on assigned academic and/or student and Campus Services committees. Participate in scheduled meetings with assigned academic advisor(s) and/or faculty regarding student concerns on a need-to-know basis, such as early alerts; manage retention system notifications, follow ups, interventions, and communication in a timely manner.
  • Maintain open communication with various departments on a need-to-know basis to include, but not limited to: Wellness Center, Academic Affairs, Finance, Student Enrollment and Financial Aid, Housing, Safety and Security, Campus Services, and Administration (President’s Office).
  • Reporting and documentation: Maintain contact statistics for monthly reporting to the UTTC Board of Directors. Maintain accurate record-keeping system for:  time/attendance and reports on student progress, as well as student withdrawals. Stay current with data entry into electronic health records system (Kareo). Record keeping, documentation and processing, and reporting are to be completed in a timely manner and with accuracy.
  • Assist with grant proposals, including prospect research, writing, and grant management when assigned by Health and Wellness Director.
  • Be available to teach selected content (e.g., suicide prevention, mental health awareness, etc.) for First Year Experience classes and other classes on campus.
  • Attend professional development training(s) and continuing education related to licensed profession.
  • Perform other duties as assigned (i.e., Campus Cupboard, disability services/Accuplacer testing, Wellness Center front desk coverage, emergency on-call response).

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Working Conditions:

  • Counseling and general office environment.
  • Normal working hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm with one hour for lunch.
  • Will need to work additional hours as the need arises.
  • Occasional travel to attend workshops and/or conferences.

Physical Demands: 

  • Able to walk across campus to other departments/buildings.
  • Must be able to go up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to sit for longer periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
  • Ability to perform daily office duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or related field.
  • North Dakota licensure as LBSW; Master’s degree preferred in Social Work or Counseling with licensure as LMSW, LCSW, LAPC, LPC respectively.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and compatible software. Operate basic office equipment: copier, fax machine, digital phone system.
  • Previous experience within a post-secondary college setting preferred.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Familiarity and practical application of counseling techniques and methods.
  • Training and experience in trauma-informed care and practice.
  • Experience facilitating counseling support groups.
  • Experience in individual counseling and therapies (e.g., CBT, DBT, EMDR, MI).
  • Understanding of case management and timely case notes and documentation.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to relate to diverse ages and groups; sensitivity to Native American culture and disadvantaged students; understanding of tribally appropriate practices.
