Summary of Duties:

  • Oversight of Student Health operations, ensuring compliance with the scope of work outlined in the college’s contract with Indian Health Services (IHS). Develop and manage operational budget(s) for the Student Health, including the submission of electronic purchase requests (EPRs). Liaise for medical and billing concerns with IHS Facilities, local medical providers, and resources as necessary.
  • Advise the Health & Wellness Director on short and long-term planning, in support of UTTC’s Strategic Plan and the Wellness Center’s annual planning.
  • Remain current and adhere to legal requirements that affect students in higher education, i.e., FERPA, HIPAA, ADA, and/or all governing guidelines related to the UTTC community.
  • Prepare and submit accurate reports, documentation, correspondence, and health education awareness and disease prevention information, including tracking data for monthly reports in a timely manner.
  • Actively participate in the “high risk” crisis management team that provides holistic services in meeting the individual need(s) of the student and in support of their family system.
  • Provide comprehensive nursing assessments and assists to provide medical services to students and/or their dependents according to the scope of work under the Indian Health Services contract that may include necessary medical referrals and follow-up appointments to local health, dental, eye clinics or hospitals or performing CPR, AED, or other emergency interventions.
  • Maintain and perform general infection control measures and safety practices related to infectious disease and blood borne pathogens, including proper cleaning and disinfection and safe handling of sharps and other biohazardous materials.
  • Complete necessary documentation of student encounters within the electronic medical record system, ensuring that appropriate documentation is complete in a timely manner and maintained appropriately.
  • During extraordinary times of public health crisis (i.e., COVID-19 pandemic), direct and implement clinic operations and response related to specific disease testing, vaccination, mitigation efforts, and communication with local and state health departments. Student Health Coordinator will be a point of contact, along with the Health & Wellness Director, with state and local health officials, lead personnel, and selected others for distribution of information, problem-solving, data collection, and strategic response planning.
  • Dispense OTC medications per standing orders (nurse practitioner) of the Student Health Standing Orders manual and provide necessary authorization slips to students and/or their dependents to obtain prescriptions from a local pharmacy.
  • Order and administer vaccines/immunizations and input vaccination records on the ND state tracking system. (THOR).
  • Maintain Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certification and perform testing as needed such as blood glucose, dipstick urinalysis, pregnancy testing, cholesterol screening, Influenza swabs and strep throat testing.
  • Perform inventory and ordering of all Student Health supplies; monitor expiration dates for all clinic medications and dispose of any medication which has reached expiration.
  • Perform vision, dental, and scoliosis (grades 5-8) screenings of preschool and elementary school children, with appropriate referrals if necessary.
  • Perform pediculosis screenings at the pre-school and elementary school, or as necessary, with follow-up screenings and distribution of treatment instructions, shampoo, and combs if necessary.
  • Plan workshops and/or health screenings/fairs for the students on health-related subjects such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, hypertension, etc.
  • Arrange transportation for students requiring medical attention at a local medical facility or the nearest Indian Health Services clinic through taxi vouchers, bus tickets, or actual transportation.
  • Implement and/or enhance professional development opportunities, including interacting with networking systems both on and off campus.
  • Review grant opportunities, submit applications, manage health-related grants when received.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: • Supervise temporary part-time nursing staff when needed and/or supervise one LPN. • Supervision and management of Student Health employees, including conducting employee annual performance reviews.

Working Conditions:

  • General office nurse conditions
  • Normal working hours:  8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with one-hour lunch break
  • Will need to work additional hours as the need arise, especially during epidemic/pandemic times.
  • May need to respond to emergency calls to other campus areas.
  • Will need to travel occasionally to attend workshops and/or conferences.
  • Position may require occasional evening or early morning hours.

 

Physical Demands: 

  • Must be able to handle stressful emergency situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Must be able to repeatedly bend, walk and stand for hours at a time.
  • Must be able to lift to 50 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (BSN)
  • Current North Dakota RN license, with preference given to FNP licensed in North Dakota.
  • Five years of professional nursing experience/practice
  • One year of management or supervisory experience
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certified or willing to obtain within 3 months of hire
