United Tribes Technical College Student Selected to Visit NASA in October

Bismarck, ND – Kate Gates of United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) has been selected to travel to NASA’s Glenn Research Center this fall to participate in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) onsite experience.

Gates has been selected as one of 319 community college students from across the U.S. to be part of the NCAS onsite experience.

The five-week online activity culminates with a four-day on-site event at a NASA Center and offers students the opportunity to interact with NASA engineers and others as they learn more about careers in science and engineering. While at NASA, students form teams and establish fictional companies interested in Mars exploration. Each team is responsible for developing and testing a prototype rover, forming a company infrastructure, managing a budget, and developing communications and outreach.

The onsite experience at NASA includes briefings by NASA subject matter experts, information on how to apply for internships and a tour of NASA’s unique facilities.

NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars is an activity funded in part by the Minority University Research and Education Program, or MUREP, which is committed to engaging underrepresented and underserved students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in authentic learning experiences to sustain a diverse workforce.

With this activity, NASA continues the agency’s tradition of engaging the nation in NASA’s mission.

“NCAS not only inspires community college students to advance in STEM fields, but it also opens doors for future careers at NASA.  NCAS has a legacy of alumni moving from NASA internships to and ultimately entering the NASA workforce.  It is rewarding to see the progression of a student from NCAS participant to NASA colleague,” Joeletta Patrick, Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) Manager.

Gates is the second UTTC student to participate in the program this year. Brett Alberts, UTTC student, was chosen as a NASA Community College Aerospace Scholar earlier this year.

Summer Work to Repay Student Bill

BISMARCK – United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) is hiring.

UTTC is offering current and former students the opportunity to earn $25 per hour to help clean-up the campus while they clear-up their UTTC student bills.

The project is part of the Work Repayment Program (WRP). The program’s goal is to help current and former students erase unpaid bills they may have accumulated while attending school here at UTTC.

This summer’s WRP campaign’s first summer session will go from May 4, 2018 – June 1, 2018, and the second summer session will run from July 9, 2018 – July 27, 2018.

The deadline to apply is Friday, May 4 by 2:00 p.m. for the first summer session and Friday, June 29 by 2:00 p.m. for the second.

UTTC will provide meals at no cost, and dormitory housing if needed. Only students with an outstanding debt are eligible. Each will become a temporary worker and lend a helping hand on various projects across campus. All earnings will go toward the student’s outstanding bill.

You can find the application form online at the UTTC website or at the college’s Human Resource department.

Applications will be first come-first served. For more information, please contact Steve Shepherd, 701.221.1537, sshepherd@uttc.edu.
